Hibernian vs Aberdeen
Hibernian vs Aberdeen Preview
There is a lot going on at Easter Road right now, and none of it is particularly comfortable for Hibernian supporters. A managerial sacking mid-week, a wretched run of home results, and an interim boss walking into the dugout on Saturday afternoon with the cameras rolling and the pressure already building. John Potter takes charge of his first game for Hibs in circumstances that nobody would choose, facing an Aberdeen side that are riding high after a thumping win and desperately keen to push themselves up the table. This one has context written all over it.
Hibernian sit ninth in the Scottish Premiership with six points from six games, which flatters them a little given the way the last three fixtures have gone. Three straight league defeats, including a 1-0 home loss to Kilmarnock that apparently sealed David Gray’s fate, tells you everything about the trajectory this club has been on. Making matters worse, that Kilmarnock defeat was reportedly Hibernian’s sixth consecutive home loss in the league, and they now face the prospect of setting a grim new club record on their own patch. Aberdeen, sitting just above them in eighth with seven points, arrive knowing they can really stick the knife in with a win here.
The Dons have their own complications, mind. A four-game winless run before last weekend had stripped some of the early-season optimism away, but a 4-0 hammering of Motherwell changes the mood considerably. Stephen Robinson’s men look sharp again, Kevin Nisbet is firing, and they head to Edinburgh with exactly the kind of confidence an unsettled home side does not want to see walking through the away dressing room door.
Hibernian vs Aberdeen Form
Cast your mind back to early August and Hibs actually looked decent. They beat Rangers 2-1 at Easter Road with a late winner from Callum Wright, which is the kind of result that gets supporters buzzing, and followed it up with another 2-1 victory against Dundee. Two wins from three at the start, a bit of swagger, and a decent platform to build on. Then it all fell apart. Hearts beat them 3-1, then St Johnstone won 2-1, then Kilmarnock came to Easter Road and nicked it 1-0 on a day when Hibs apparently could not find the net against a side propping up the division. Three defeats on the spin, the gaffer out the door, and an interim manager stepping in for this one.
What is particularly damaging for Hibs is how that home form reads. Six straight Scottish Premiership home losses is a brutal sequence, and the inability to score against Kilmarnock last time out will have rattled the coaching staff. Nathan Lowe, Martin Boyle and Owen Elding could all come in to freshen the attack, and there is an argument that the change of manager could bring a short-term lift. But you cannot guarantee a bounce, especially when the opposition arrive in this kind of form.
Aberdeen’s recent run is worth unpicking. They opened the league season with a win over Hearts, which was a strong statement, before losing three and drawing one in the next four. That is the kind of patchy form that can leave you scratching your head about where a side actually is. But then Motherwell happened. Four goals, clean sheet, Nisbet on the scoresheet again for his eleventh of the season. That is a performance and a result that gives a squad belief going into a tricky away fixture, and Robinson will have made sure his players carry that confidence into Saturday.
Hibernian vs Aberdeen Head to Head
Aberdeen can point to a 2-0 win over Hibs back in April of this year as recent evidence they have the measure of this fixture, and that result will absolutely be referenced in the buildup. However, the head-to-head picture at Easter Road specifically is a different story. The Dons have failed to win any of their last three visits to Easter Road Stadium, which is the sort of stat that chips away at away-day confidence even when a side is in decent nick. Hibs know that too, and their players will be aware that the ground has not been a happy hunting ground for Aberdeen recently.
That said, form on the day tends to matter more than historical patterns, and the current versions of these two clubs feel very different right now. A Hibs side in turmoil hosting a buoyant Aberdeen is not the same matchup as previous fixtures between them, and you have to factor in the circumstances rather than leaning too heavily on where results have gone in the past.
Hibernian vs Aberdeen Lineups
Hibernian are missing Kanayochukwu Megwa, Jordan Obita and Rocky Bushiri through injury, which limits Potter’s options before he has even started. The expected lineup sees Sallinger in goal behind a back four of Kerr, Hanley, Iredale and Passlack, with Mulligan, Devaney and Mayor providing the midfield shape and Boyle tucking in on one side. Up front, the expectation is that Elding and Lowe lead the line, with the hope that bringing in fresher faces will solve the goal-scoring problems that contributed to Gray’s exit.
Aberdeen are dealing with their own injury issues, with Bradley Lyons, Emmanuel Gyamfi, Kristers Tobers and Kusini Yengi all unavailable. Despite that, Robinson looks to have a settled side, with Muller in goal, a back line featuring Cadden, Mayo, Knoester and Guinness-Walker, and Marshall, Afeez and Ronan in midfield. Molloy adds energy in the middle of the park. Up top, the Nisbet and Olusanya partnership looks the clear first-choice pairing, and with Nisbet in the kind of form he is showing, Aberdeen have a genuine match-winner on the pitch.
Hibernian vs Aberdeen Tactics
Potter will almost certainly want Hibernian to be compact and hard to break down first, with the idea being to stop the rot and give the crowd something to cheer before asking the team to push forward. The problem is that Hibs have shown a real inability to create and convert chances in recent weeks, and simply reorganising the shape will not automatically fix the attacking problems. Boyle and Elding will need to show sharpness they have not consistently delivered, and a home side that lacks confidence can be vulnerable to an early sucker punch if Aberdeen come out with purpose.
Robinson’s Aberdeen will look to press high and turn the ball over quickly, using the space in behind Hibs’ full-backs and feeding Nisbet with service that allows him to operate on the shoulder of the last defender. Olusanya’s movement and pace alongside him creates a genuine problem for a back four that could look uncertain. If Aberdeen score first, the pressure on an already fragile Hibs side becomes enormous, and the away side will know that getting on the front foot early could be the key to unlocking this game before Hibs have a chance to settle under their new man.
Hibernian vs Aberdeen Prediction and Betting Tips
Interim managers do occasionally spark a reaction, and there is always a chance Hibs ride that emotional wave and nick something here. But the underlying picture is difficult to ignore. Six straight home defeats, a misfiring attack, key players missing, and an opposition side who just put four past Motherwell and have a striker currently banging goals in at a remarkable rate. The circumstances feel like they point in one direction.
Aberdeen to win this one looks the sensible call. The Dons have the momentum, the personnel and the confidence to go to Easter Road and take all three points, and Hibs’ home record this season gives no reason to back the hosts. Aberdeen away win at a decent price, backed by Nisbet’s current form and Robinson’s well-drilled shape, is where the value sits here.
