Brighton & Hove Albion vs Bologna
Brighton & Hove Albion vs Bologna Preview
The final dress rehearsal before it starts for real. Brighton wrap up their pre-season preparations on Saturday afternoon when Bologna come to town, and while the result won’t count for anything in the table, there’s still plenty riding on this one — namely Fabian Hurzeler getting a good look at his squad ahead of what promises to be a fascinating 2026-27 Premier League campaign. The Seagulls kick off their league season against Aston Villa on August 23rd, so this is the last chance to bed in new faces, sharpen the system, and get minutes into legs before the competitive stuff arrives.
Brighton come into this in decent nick, having put together three wins on the spin this pre-season — including a tidy 3-0 dismantling of Roma last time out. That’s the kind of performance that gets you in a good mood heading into a new campaign. Bologna, by contrast, will want to put a real stinker behind them after getting turned over 4-1 by Pisa, which isn’t the sort of scoreline any side wants heading into the final stretch of their pre-season. New head coach Domenico Tedesco will be keen to see a reaction, and with a largely overhauled squad, this fixture gives him another opportunity to figure out what he’s actually working with.
Both clubs have had busy summers in the transfer market — Brighton bringing in six new faces while shifting 14 out the door, Bologna doing something similar in even more dramatic fashion with 20 departures. So there’s a newness to both squads here that makes this genuinely interesting to watch, even for a neutral. Lots of new combinations being tested, lots of players with something to prove. Saturday afternoon football with a bit of intrigue behind it — you could do a lot worse.
Brighton & Hove Albion vs Bologna Form
Brighton have looked sharp throughout pre-season, all things considered. They opened the summer with a 4-1 win over Wycombe — solid enough, if not exactly a statement — then pushed past Strasbourg 4-3 in a game that had a bit more bite to it. The Roma result, though, was the one that caught the eye. Three-nil is a convincing margin against any opposition, and while pre-season results have to be taken with a pinch of salt, the manner of that win suggested some genuine cohesion was building in the Hurzeler camp. The front line looks lively, the midfield structure looks purposeful, and that’ll be encouraging as the Premier League opener edges closer.
Bologna’s pre-season has been a more mixed bag. Three wins over Iraklis 1908 and Cambuur twice gave them some momentum, but sandwiched around those was a draw and then the heavy defeat to Pisa that ended their preparations in disappointing fashion. Losing 4-1 to a Serie B side — and Pisa are a second-tier outfit — is the kind of result that raises eyebrows. It’s pre-season, of course, and Tedesco will know that, but he’ll also know that confidence matters heading into the start of a new season, and his side will need to show a different face on Saturday. With 20 players having left the club this summer and a host of new arrivals stepping in, there’s a fair bit of settling-in still to do, and that fragility showed against Pisa.
The momentum, in short, is clearly with Brighton. Three wins, a progressively improving level of performance, and a settled enough structure under Hurzeler to make you think they’re building towards something. Bologna come in with some question marks — particularly defensively — that will need answering if they’re to leave the Amex with anything.
Brighton & Hove Albion vs Bologna Head to Head
This is a fairly rare fixture in terms of competitive history between the two clubs, and with pre-season friendlies obviously not having a long shared record to draw from, there’s limited direct head-to-head data to lean on. What we can say is that these are two clubs operating in a similar space — both finished eighth in their respective top flights last season, both are building with interesting squads, and neither is a club that plays ugly football. You’d expect both sides to want to get on the ball and play, which should make for a watchable afternoon even if the intensity won’t match competitive fare.
Brighton on home soil will feel like the natural favourites here. They’ve been building momentum at the Amex all summer, and Italian opponents on a pre-season tour don’t always arrive at full tilt, particularly after the kind of result Bologna just suffered. The Seagulls’ fans will expect to see something to get excited about ahead of the new campaign.
Brighton & Hove Albion vs Bologna Lineups
Brighton look set to name a strong side for this one, with the expectation being that Hurzeler largely sticks with the lineup that started against Roma — though he’ll rotate as the game goes on to keep everyone sharp and avoid unnecessary knocks this close to the Premier League opener. Yasin Ayari and Pascal Gross look set to continue pulling the strings in midfield, which is a partnership that looks to have real potential. Georginio Rutter should get another outing in the forward positions, and one of the summer’s headline signings, Luka Vuskovic from Spurs, is expected to slot in at centre-back. The one notable absentee is Carlos Baleba, who is sidelined with an ankle injury — a frustrating blow for the midfielder so close to the start of the season.
Bologna will be looking to give a number of their summer arrivals some run-out time, with Mikel Amondarain, Tommaso Pobega and Rahim Alhassane all expected to feature. Jonathan Rowe should provide some energy on the flanks, while centre-back Jhon Lucumi — who has been attracting considerable Premier League interest this summer — is set to play, which makes this a decent audition of sorts for him. Whether that affects his focus or not is another matter entirely, but he’ll want to put in a good shift regardless of what’s going on around him off the pitch.
Brighton & Hove Albion vs Bologna Tactics
Under Hurzeler, Brighton play with a clear identity — they press high, they want the ball, and they’re not afraid to commit bodies forward. The wide players are expected to get inside and create overloads, and you can see how the likes of Rutter and Minteh fit into that setup perfectly. The midfield two of Gross and Ayari provides a balance of experience and energy, with Gross as the organising brain and Ayari doing a lot of the running. At the back, Vuskovic’s ball-playing ability is something Hurzeler will want to build into the structure — the plan is to play out from behind, not hoof it and hope.
Bologna under Tedesco tend to sit in a more structured shape without the ball, looking to be compact and transition quickly when they win possession. With Orsolini and Rowe on the flanks and Dovbyk as a centre-forward, there’s a clear counter-attacking threat if they can win the ball in good areas. The midfield trio of Ferguson, Pobega and Amondarain gives them a decent engine room, but the chemistry between these players is still being built and that could be where Brighton look to apply pressure — particularly if they can pin Bologna back early. A high defensive line from Brighton could also expose Lucumi and Helland to some direct running, which is worth watching.
Brighton & Hove Albion vs Bologna Prediction and Betting Tips
Brighton have carried good form throughout this pre-season and they’re building nicely ahead of that Villa opener. Bologna, though, aren’t without quality — Lucumi, Rowe and Dovbyk in particular give them genuine attacking threat — and Tedesco will demand a response after the Pisa embarrassment. Both sides are likely to create chances given their attacking inclinations, and with squads still being bedded in and defensive structures not yet at peak sharpness, finding the net is probably not going to be the problem for either side on Saturday afternoon.
A 1-1 draw feels like a fair outcome here. Brighton might not go full throttle with the Premier League season on the horizon, Hurzeler will rotate heavily in the second half, and Bologna will want to show they’re better than that Pisa result suggested. Both teams to score in a share of the spoils looks the most sensible call.
