That is the brutal reality facing Auxerre as they head into Saturday evening’s clash at Stade Abbe Deschamps, and Will Still knows his side desperately need something from this one. The Belgian tactician inherited a squad that finished 15th last season, barely surviving by the skin of their teeth, and so far the early signs suggest this campaign could get every bit as nervy as the last one. Nice are not exactly rolling into town full of swagger either. Olivier Pantaloni’s side survived through the playoff route last term after finishing 16th, and the summer has not brought a fresh wave of confidence with it. One goal in three league games tells its own sorry story, and their away form is nothing short of alarming. This is a fixture between two clubs that are absolutely desperate for their first win of the season, but the truth is one of them is going to go home disappointed again.
What makes this genuinely interesting from a betting angle is that the desperation cuts both ways. Auxerre have home support behind them, they have been scoring goals even while leaking them, and they face a Nice side that has looked toothless on the road. For the hosts, this feels like one of those nights where the occasion could work in their favour. They are not a side that is completely unable to create. The goals are going in at both ends, and that pattern has been consistent enough to take seriously. At home specifically, they have won three and drawn two of their last six at Stade Abbe Deschamps, with just the one defeat. Confidence is shot, no question, but the attacking threat is real.
Nice’s numbers are marginally better in terms of points, but one goal in three games is its own kind of crisis. A 3-0 battering at Paris FC on matchday two was followed by a 1-1 draw with newly promoted Le Mans at home last weekend, with Elye Wahi’s 44th-minute equaliser rescuing a point. Both of their points so far have come on home soil, which tells you everything. Away from the Allianz Riviera, Nice have been dreadful, and this is not a recent blip. Since the start of last season, no French top-flight club has lost more away games than Nice’s 12. Five winless trips on the road in a row coming into this one, and they are being asked to perform at a ground where they have a wretched record.

It does not guarantee anything, especially given how porous AJA’s defence has been, but the pattern here is clear and consistent enough to carry genuine weight.

Auxerre are dealing with a fairly significant injury list. Bryan Okoh and Assane Diousse are both out with cruciate ligament injuries, while Sekou Fofana and Marvin Senaya will not feature due to groin and thigh problems respectively. Francisco Sierralta has departed on a season-long loan to Polish side Piast Gliwice, and new signing Axel Tuanzebe is a doubt after missing last weekend and still building match fitness. Will Still will almost certainly want his side to press high and use the home crowd to set the tempo early. The problem is that the defensive structure has been so unreliable that pressing with intensity leaves them vulnerable to the counter, and Nice, despite their lack of goals, do have pace in Wahi and N’Goumou. Expect Auxerre to try and play through the thirds with Ahamada and Piedfort providing the engine in midfield, while Archer’s movement up top will be key. Still needs to find a way to stop the bleeding defensively, and with several first-choice options missing across the back line, that is easier said than done.
Nice under Pantaloni look like a side still trying to find an identity. They have been compact and hard to beat in one sense, but they are not creating enough, and Wahi has been left isolated too often. Axel Witsel’s presence in midfield adds some solidity and composure on the ball, but the creative link between midfield and attack is broken right now. Away from home, Nice have tended to sit deep and try to absorb pressure, which given Auxerre’s leaky defence might actually invite the kind of open game that suits the hosts more than the visitors. If Nice park the bus and Auxerre find a way through, Le Gym do not have the firepower to make them pay at the other end.

This is a game that sets up well for Auxerre. They are at home, they need a result badly, they have been scoring goals throughout, and they are facing a Nice side with a dreadful away record and a goal drought that shows no signs of ending. The head-to-head record at this ground backs up the case for the hosts, and with Nice missing several key players and looking toothless going forward, it is hard to see where their goal is coming from. Auxerre’s defensive problems are real, but if Nice cannot score against Le Mans at home, a rocking Stade Abbe Deschamps is not going to make life any easier for them.
The bet here is Auxerre to win and under 2.5 goals. If you are backing the home side, the most likely route to victory is a tight, edgy 1-0 or 2-0 rather than another goal-fest.
