Fc Twente vs Fc Utrecht
FC Twente vs FC Utrecht Preview
Sunday evening at De Grolsch Veste and FC Twente have every reason to be confident heading into this one. Fourth in the Eredivisie, unbeaten in eight competitive matches, and with a full house of home points to defend, John van den Brom’s side are exactly where they want to be at this stage of the season. Utrecht arrive as the 13th-placed visitors, sitting uncomfortably close to the relegation playoff places, and with enough problems of their own to make this look like a comfortable afternoon on paper for the hosts. But football has a habit of making liars of those who assume too much, and Twente will know better than to switch off.
That said, the narrative around Twente right now is genuinely exciting. This is a side that beat PSV Eindhoven 3-2 before the international break, then ground out a European result against FC Thun on Thursday, going 22-6 in shots and winning 1-0. The margin should have been much wider, and Van den Brom will have made that clear in the dressing room. But there is something to be said for a team that keeps clean sheets even when the finishing is off. The underlying numbers are there. The goals will follow.
Utrecht are not the disaster zone they looked like in September. Anthony Correia replaced the retired Ron Jans in the summer and the first few weeks were genuinely rough, including a 4-1 hiding by AZ and a 6-1 thrashing from PSV. But seven points from the last 12 shows some recovery, and back-to-back wins over Excelsior and Willem II give them a sliver of momentum. They also have the small matter of a 2-0 win in this exact fixture last season. The visiting fans will hold onto that. Whether it means anything this time round is a different conversation entirely.
FC Twente vs FC Utrecht Form
Twente’s form line is about as solid as you will find anywhere in the Eredivisie right now. Since losing 1-0 to Qarabag in Baku, they have not been beaten in any competition, picking up six wins and two draws across eight matches. Domestically, their unbeaten top-flight run actually stretches back further, with their only league defeat coming on the opening day away at Heerenveen. Since then they have collected 17 points from 21 available and, crucially, a perfect 12 from 12 at home. De Grolsch Veste has been a fortress and nothing in Utrecht’s recent form suggests they are equipped to change that.
The frustration on Thursday was the missed chances rather than the performance itself. Outshoting Thun 22-6 and only winning by one goal is not ideal preparation for a match where you might need goals early to settle the nerves. But Twente’s attacking output across the season tells a clearer story. Wout Weghorst has four goals and two assists in the league. Younes Taha has two goals and two assists. Daouda Weidmann and Sondre Orjasaeter are chipping in too. This is a functioning attacking unit with multiple outlets, and they will fancy themselves to convert more against a Utrecht defence that has shipped goals regularly this term.
Utrecht’s form is more nuanced. The heavy defeats in August against AZ and PSV dragged their early-season numbers into ugly territory, but the last four games have shown a different side. Wins over Excelsior and Willem II bookend a period where Correia has steadied the ship and got his players believing again. Yoann Cathline grabbed a brace in the 3-1 win over Willem II last weekend, which matters given that top scorer Artem Stepanov is currently injured. Still, two wins on the bounce against modest opposition is a very different test to what faces them on Sunday. This is the biggest challenge their improving form has encountered yet.
FC Twente vs FC Utrecht Head to Head
The recent head-to-head record between these two is tight enough to make you think twice about writing Utrecht off entirely. Their 2-0 victory at De Grolsch Veste in March of last season is the obvious reference point, and it showed that Utrecht can absolutely turn up in Enschede when they are on their game. That result came when Utrecht were in considerably better nick than they are now, though, and Twente’s home form this season is on a different level to where it was for stretches of last campaign.
Going further back, encounters between the two clubs tend to produce goals and rarely end in boredom. Twente’s home advantage has generally told over the longer run, but Utrecht have won in Enschede before and their fans will be making that very clear on Sunday evening. The key question is whether Correia’s side can replicate anything like the defensive discipline that underpinned that March victory, because on current evidence their back line has been far too porous at the top end of the season.
FC Twente vs FC Utrecht Lineups
Twente are dealing with a handful of absentees in Lars Unnerstall, Max Bruns and Stav Lemkin, all of whom are unavailable with muscle complaints. None of those three are first-choice starters so the impact on Van den Brom’s preferred XI is limited. The expected lineup has plenty of quality throughout, with Drommel in goal behind a back four of Van Rooij, Propper, Nijstad and Adelgaard. The attacking threat comes through Taha and Pjaca feeding Weghorst, with Weidmann and Orjasaeter providing further support from deeper positions. It is a well-structured side and Van den Brom has the luxury of mostly picking from strength.
Utrecht’s situation is more problematic. Stepanov, their top scorer with five goals this season, is expected to miss out with an ankle injury. That is a significant blow. Noah Ohio is also absent with a knee problem, as are Alonzo Engwanda and Miliano Jonathans. Kevin Paredes is a doubt and will be assessed before kick-off. Cathline stepping up with a brace last weekend was welcome news for Correia, and the Frenchman looks set to lead the line again here. But the depth of their attacking options is thin, and Twente’s defensive unit will be well aware of who to watch. Barkas starts in goal for the visitors, with De Wit and Broholm expected to provide the creative link.
FC Twente vs FC Utrecht Tactics
Twente under Van den Brom like to control possession in the middle of the park and use width to stretch defences before finding Weghorst centrally. Zerrouki and Weidmann give them good protection without sacrificing the ability to get forward, and Taha on the left is one of the more dangerous wide players in the Dutch top flight at the moment. The pressing is controlled rather than frantic, designed to win the ball back in good positions rather than throw bodies forward recklessly. At home, they have looked particularly assured in this system, keeping shape without sacrificing aggression when they need it.
Utrecht under Correia have tried to set up with a compact defensive structure and hit teams on the counter, which partly explains the improvement in recent weeks against sides happy to have the ball. The issue is that Twente at home are not going to sit back and invite pressure. They will push the game on from the start, and Utrecht will be forced to defend for long stretches. Without Stepanov to hold the ball up and give them an outlet, those counter-attacks become even harder to execute. If Twente can stay patient and trust the process when chances are not immediately converting, they should have more than enough to break through.
FC Twente vs FC Utrecht Prediction and Betting Tips
Twente have the home advantage, the form, the firepower and the personnel edge given Utrecht’s injury issues going forward. The Thursday performance was not perfect by any means, but creating 22 shots against a European opponent tells you the attacking intent is there. Utrecht have shown signs of life under Correia but this is a major step up from Excelsior and Willem II. The visitors’ defence has already been cut open by the better sides this season, and Twente have the tools to do exactly the same here.
The 3-1 scoreline feels right. Twente win comfortably at home with goals coming through multiple channels, while Utrecht nick one to make it look respectable. Back Twente on the handicap and expect goals at both ends.
